What is Rhinosinusitis and Its Symptoms?

Are you suffering from this incurable disease named Rhinosinusitis? Firstly let's give a briefing of what is the disease all about. This is a latest classification of sinusitis which is a condition of infection or inflammation of the para-nasal sinuses resulting from infection which is debatable. The infection is caused by various autoimmune issues or from bacteria, fungi, virus, and allergens. This is a very highly contagious disease which can spread via humans through an infected surface or via air.

Rhino sinusitis has been classified into two groups depending on factors of location and duration. According to location this can be classified into four types affecting the sinus cavity which are:

Maxillary sinusitis- has chances of having pain or pressure in the area of maxillary like the cheek.

Frontal sinusitis- has probabilities of painfulness and pressure in the frontal sinus cavity which is the area above and behind the eyes resulting in headache.

Ethmoid sinusitis- can result in pain or pressure between and behind the eyes resulting in headache.

Sphenoid sinusitis- it mainly affects the vertex of the head and sometimes behind the eyes causing pain and pressure.

By duration Rhino sinusitis can be of three types like acute (less than four weeks), sub acute (four to twelve weeks) and chronic (more than twelve weeks). All of them are characterized by similar symptoms and are hard to differentiate. Among these acute sinusitis is the commonest to affect almost every adult sometime or other.

In case of acute sinusitis diagnosis is done clinically. Sinusitis caused by bacteria or virus is hardly distinguishable. However they are considered on the basis of the duration.

Diagnosis of chronic sinusitis which ranges beyond 12 weeks is very complicated. A collective test comprising of nasal endoscopy, CT scan, histology of tissue sample and other clinical symptoms are used for its confirmation.

Treatment is done through conservative measures, antibiotics and corticosteroids which help in short-term remedies. Next: learn how you might provide relief to yourself by following the links below.
